The Department of Fisheries, Livestock and Veterinary Services facilitates the development of a sustainable and viable fisheries and livestock sector in order to ensure food security and enhance the sector’s contribution to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Livestock Development Section

The Livestock Development Section is charged with the responsibility of streamlining livestock production and delivery of livestock extension services within the department.

Fisheries Section

Functions of the Fisheries Section

• Conserve, manage, and develop fishery resources and water in a sustainable manner
• Manage, develop, and protect aquaculture, vegetation, and fish habitats
• Regulate the conduct of fishing operations, including aquaculture and related activities
• Ensure fair access to fisheries resources for commercial, recreational, and indigenous use

Veterinary Services Section

• Provision of veterinary services to enhance animal health
• Prevent, detect, control, and eradicate animal diseases to improve productivity and protect human health
• Identification and tracing of animals and animal products to regulate movement and prevent disease spread
• Implementation of veterinary public health programmes to ensure food safety and welfare of animals and humans

Fisheries & Livestock Marketing Development Section

Functions Include:

• Provision of fisheries and livestock market information
• Market infrastructure development
• Post-harvest management and nutrition services
• Facilitating private sector investment in fisheries and livestock production, marketing, and processing
• Enhancing entrepreneurial skills for farmers, traders, processors, and value chain actors
• Facilitating credit and financial linkages for smallholder farmers
