LUANGWA DISTRICT PARTICIPATES IN EARLY WARNING SYSTEM TRAINING FOR PEACEFUL ELECTIONS
Luangwa, Feira – Petauke District – 7th July 2026
Luangwa District Electoral Officer (DEO), Mr. Greyson Sakala, together with the District Conflict Management Committee (DCMC), the Voter Education Coordinator (DVECP), and the two District Voter Education Trainers (DVETs), are among representatives from Six Districts participating in a three-day Early Warning System (EWS) training being conducted by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) in Petauke District at Alpha Executive Lodge.
The training was officially opened by the Petauke District Electoral Officer, Mr. Kelvin Banda, in his opening remarks, he described the Early Warning System as a significant milestone in enhancing the Commission’s capacity to detect, monitor, and respond to potential electoral conflicts before they escalate.
He explained that the primary purpose of the system is to identify, prevent, monitor, and coordinate responses to electoral conflicts throughout the entire electoral cycle. Rather than waiting for disputes or acts of violence to occur, the system enables the Commission to anticipate potential threats, identify areas that may be vulnerable to conflict, and implement timely interventions.
This represents an important shift from responding to electoral conflict after it has occurred to preventing it before it affects citizens, communities, and the electoral process.
Mr. Banda further stated that the Early Warning System adopts a multi-channel approach, allowing every citizen to report incidents or potential threats regardless of the type of mobile phone they use or whether they have internet access. He noted that this accessibility reflects the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that every eligible citizen can contribute to promoting peaceful elections.
In conclusion, Mr. Banda expressed confidence that by the end of the training, all participants would have acquired the knowledge, practical skills, and confidence required to effectively support the implementation of the Early Warning System and contribute to peaceful, credible, transparent, and inclusive elections.
The training has brought together participants from six districts and forms part of the Electoral Commission of Zambia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen electoral conflict prevention mechanisms and safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
